  2. 'More members of the military than I've seen in my entire life'published at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2021

    Samantha Granville
    BBC News, National Mall

I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea to have inauguration in January but it’s absolutely freezing and the wind is making it hard to listen and talk.

Normally the mall would be flooded with tourists wishing the new president well, but instead I’ve seen more members of the military in a single morning that I have in my entire life.

Not only did it take 2.5 hours to go 20 minutes, but we had to go through multiple checkpoints as if we were in a war zone.

The mall is eerily quiet, with nearly 200,000 flags to mark all the people that would normally be there.

There’s eight of us huddled in the BBC tent, fighting for power outlets and just hoping it starts to warm up before the ceremony starts

    BBC North America reporter

At Joint Base Andrews, before boarding Air Force One for the final time in his term, Donald Trump had one last opportunity to appreciate the pomp and pageantry of the presidency.

As a military band played, American flags whipped in the wind, officers smartly saluted and cannons fired a 21-gun salute, Trump gave a reprise of his previous day’s prerecorded farewell message.

He thanked his supporters and promised that the movement that swept him to power four years ago was just getting started. He painted the adversities he has faced over the past four years as ones endured for the good of the American people.

“We left it all, as the athletes would say, we left it all on the field,” he said. “We had a lot of obstacles, and we went through the obstacles.”

For four years the powers and prerogatives of office have insulated Trump from the sharpest blows of his adversaries and critics. Now he is back on his own. He said goodbye, he offered his love and added, coyly, ”we will be back in some form."

Speculation is rife over what he has planned next, but one thing is certain: His road ahead will be travelled as a private citizen once more.

Considering these are his last remarks as president, Trump seems quite lively and positive here in his delivery - contrary to US media reports that he has been seething for days.

"We've left it all on the field," he says, to cheers from his supporters.

He's trying to rouse his followers and make it a moment of celebration rather than gloom.

"You are amazing," he tells them, to more applause.
