    Jeong Park, a reporter with the LA Times who has been covering the shooting, signed off his coverage for the night with a Twitter thread, external about Monterey Park and its significance to Asian Americans in the area.

    "I was at the Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park just hours before, marvelling at its scale and buying (probably way too many) skewers," he wrote.

    "Monterey Park, to me as someone who visits often, is a city and community that really crystallizes, in my opinion, the diversity and vibrancy of Asian Americans.

    "It's hard to define Monterey Park - a city that's America's first 'suburban Chinatown', but also a city with multiple openly gay API [Asian/ Pacific Islander] council members.

    "A city struggling with poverty - boarding houses, for instance - but also a city with [an] incredible amount of tenacity.

    "In all the coverage that's to follow about this city, I hope all of this doesn't get forgotten."

    Saturday's shooting at Monterey Park was one of the worst in California's modern history.

    In 2018, a former Marine combat veteran killed 12 people in a bar in Thousand Oaks before taking his own life.

    Prior to that, a husband and wife killed 14 people at a workplace holiday party in San Bernardino in 2015 before dying in a shootout with police.

    The deadliest shooting in modern California history was in 1984 when a gunman killed 21 people at a McDonald's restaurant in San Ysidro, near San Diego.

    The Californian city of Monterey Park is home to about 60,000 people and its population is predominantly Asian American, according to US Census data.

    About 65% of its residents identify as Asian American, while 27% are Hispanic or Latino.

    Almost 14% of the city's population are white, 4% identify as two or more races, and 1% are Black.

    Some of those in hospital are in a critical condition and the suspect is still at large.

    Monterey Park is about eight miles away from Los Angeles and was incorporated as a city in 1916.

    Earlier we heard from Captain Andrew Meyer at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who said the suspect in the Monterey Park shooting was still at large.

    He said there was no clear motive and it was too early to say whether the incident was being treated as a hate crime.

    Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation into the incident, during which ten people were killed, Meyer said.

    Among them are the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, as well local police and other law enforcement agencies, he added.

    Officials have said no-one was injured in the Alhambra shooting, and the Monterey Park suspect is still at large.

    Police are looking into a possible link between the shooting in Monterey Park and another in the nearby city of Alhambra.

    Monterey Park and Alhambra are only a few miles apart, both within Los Angeles County.

    Speaking to reporters, Captain Andrew Meyer of the local sheriff's department said: “We’re aware of an incident that occurred in Alhambra and we have investigators on scene trying to determine if there’s a connection between these two incidents.”

    Monterey Park city authorities have cancelled the rest of the Lunar New Year festival, external, which was scheduled to carry on today.

    They say that although the shooting didn't happen at the event, an active investigation is currently underway and the area near and around the festival is affected.

    This decision was taken as a precaution and for everyone's safety.

    The shooting does not appear to have been related to the lunar new year celebrations, according to one local journalist.

    Speaking to BBC News, Jeong Park of the LA Times said: "What we know is that this does not seem to have ties to the Lunar New Year celebrations that happened at Monterey Park.

    “I was just at the celebrations on Saturday afternoon where tens of thousands gathered to celebrate. This does not appear to be related to that.

    "It appears to have happened at a dance studio nearby where a gunman came in with what an eyewitness described as a machine gun - or a semi-automatic gun – and had fired multiple rounds at mostly Asian-Americans from what we can believe and what we heard from the eyewitness.

    "I talked to a restaurant owner across the street from where the shooting happened. He described to me that three people had come rushing into the restaurant and told the owner to lock the door because there was a guy with a machine gun who was in the area.

    “The guy told me that about ten minutes afterward, somebody fled in a car.”

    The Monterey Park Lunar New Year festival is an annual event to mark the beginning of the lunar calendar, which is celebrated in China and other East Asian cultures.

    According to the local government website, external, this year's festival featured traditional new year lion and dragon dancers as well as food stalls, rides, and other entertainment.

    It also says that past events have attracted more than 100,000 visitors per day from across southern California.

    People inside the business where the shooting took place were "pouring out screaming" when officers arrived, police have said.

    "Last night, at approximately 22:22 [local time, 06:22 GMT] officers from the Monterey Park police department responded to a local business [on] West Garvey Avenue in the city of Monterey Park regarding a shots fired call.

    "When officers arrived on scene they arrived numerous individuals – patrons of the location – pouring out of the location screaming.

    "The officers made entry to the location and located additional victims. The Monterey Park police [and] fire department responded to the scene and treated the injured and pronounced ten of the victims deceased at the scene.

    "There were at least ten additional victims that were transported to numerous local hospitals and were listed in various conditions, from stable to critical.

    "The suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding."
