Donald Trump Jr appears in court for questioning

Prosecutors are asking Donald Trump Jr to detail his years-long involvement with his father's company.

Wearing a light pink tie and blue suit, Trump Jr said he's been involved with design, production and "anything and everything" for the company.

He can't recall how many job titles he's held.

However, he talks about his time working for the Trump International Hotel in Chicago in the early 2000s, when he said the company was trying to build the "tallest residential building" in the city.

He said his brother Eric and sister Ivanka ranked similarly high in the company hierarchy from the years of 2011 to 2017.

Donald Trump Jr is one of 15 total co-defendants in the New York Attorney General's lawsuit against Trump's businesses, along with his father Donald Trump, his brother Eric, former CFO Allen Weisselberg, and several of the family's business entities - including the Trump Organization.

His father handed him and Eric the reins of the Trump Organization in 2017 after winning the presidency.

Donald Trump Jr was involved in "all of the commercial leasing for the Trump Organization" that included the iconic skyscrapers Trump Tower and 40 Wall Street, the lawsuit states.

The AG's office also allege in court documents that he had "authority" over "numerous financial statements containing misleading asset valuations".

Donald Trump Jr has denied any wrongdoing and called the trial a "sham" on the conservative-leaning Newsmax this week.

Colleen Faherty, a prosecutor with the New York Attorney General's team, is asking Donald Trump Jr a series of questions about his background, as well as his interpretation of basic accounting terms.

She asks if he is an employee of the Trump Organization, to which Trump Jr replies: "generally speaking".

  4. What is this case all about?published at 19:01 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

While we wait for the more serious questions to start, let's look at what this trial is about.

The former president, his two adult sons - Donald Jr and Eric - and the wider Trump Organization are accused of massively inflating the value of properties by more than $2bn (£1.65bn), in order to secure favourable loans.

The judge in the case, Arthur Engoron, has already ruled that Trump misrepresented his wealth by millions of dollars.

His Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida was over-valued by 2,300% in one financial statement and his Trump Tower triplex in New York City was presented as three times its actual size, the ruling said.

This trial focuses on six other claims made in the lawsuit, including falsification of business records, insurance fraud and conspiracy.

On the opening day, lead attorney for the state, Kevin Wallace, said the defendants falsified records for personal gain. They knew the statements were false, he said, and "then used them to pursue and obtain financial benefits".

Waiting on Donald Trump Jr at court today, we’ve heard hours of cross examination from Trump’s legal team.

They've attempted to undermine the credibility of an expert witness called by the New York Attorney General’s Office.

Michiel McCarty, an investment banker, was hired by prosecutors to create a report calculating how much money banks could have lost by offering Trump loans based on inaccurate financial statements. McCarty’s report estimated that number to be as much as $168m (£138m).

Trump’s lawyers objected to his testimony on several occasions, arguing McCarty’s opinions were hypothetical and that the attorney general’s team should have asked the banks themselves.
