The Ministry of Defence (MoD) says it believes a group of British soldiers have been killed after their warrior armoured vehicle was caught in an explosion.

It happened on Tuesday night (6 March) in Helmand province.

Five were from 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and one was from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

Their families have been told and well-wishers have been leaving tributes outside 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment's headquarters in Warminster, Wiltshire.

Prime Minister David Cameron paid this tribute: "Every death and every injury reminds us of the human cost paid by our armed forces to keep our country safe."

The explosion is the biggest single loss of UK life at one time in Afghanistan since a Nimrod crash killed 14 service personnel in 2006.

The number of British military deaths in Afghanistan since 2001 now stands at 404.

Lydia Elliott - The not knowing must be heartbreaking. So glad my brother's back safe and sound. Sending deepest sympathies to their families. Let's hope by some miracle they're holed up somewhere keeping safe. :o(

Andre Buckland - Let's hope they are safe and sound dug in somewhere keeping low until it's safe to come out. If not then RIP and our thoughts go out to their families.

Danny Grey - Let's hope they can recover the bodies and get the burial that they deserve. The issue is not with equipment as it's getting better, even the yanks have their fair share of problems just like any other country. The question that should be answered is what kind of IED managed to cause that amount of damage to a Warrior vehicle. And yes I am currently serving, and I'm sure the lads at Bastion, MoD etc are doing all they can. People are always quick to comment about something they know nothing about, let's just hope they can recover the bodies.

JoJo Wilson - Poor souls. Thinking of them & their families. Bring them all home.

Andy Smoggy Lewis - All service personnel RAF, Navy & Army are well trained & trained to think & survive. Irrespective of your political beliefs can we please support the people on deployment? They are doing a job that most people who are posting would not have the bottle to do. We will be moving mountains to find the six service personnel. No one wants to go to war but we're there to help innocent people. We as Brits would be the first people to ask for help if the boot was on the other foot. We see it through and do it right. Keep safe guys, stay low & move fast.

Patrick Medhurst - The Ministry of Defence claims that everything's golden there, ie the aftercare.. But it's not. Cut-backs after cut-backs and as soon as you're no longer MoD property, they want nothing more to do with you.
