Bruno Mars closes Radio 1's Big Weekend in Londonderry

Bruno Mars has brought Radio 1's Big Weekend in Londonderry to a close.

The US singer performed a medley of hits including Grenade, Locked Out Of Heaven and Just The Way You Are.

He said: "Northern Ireland, thank you so much. Until we meet again, I love you all, good night."

Around 40,000 people attended the three-day event in Derry's Ebrington Square. Other artists on the Main Stage on Sunday included Paramore, Olly Murs and 30 Seconds To Mars.

In a surprise collaboration, The Script brought Labrinth on stage to duet on Hall of Fame and his single Earthquake.

The Script's lead singer Danny O'Donoghue said: "The crowd were absolutely everything I thought they would be. They love live music."

Guitarist Mark Sheehan added: "This part of Ireland never gets a lot of bands here. US or UK bands normally go to Belfast or Dublin. The crowd appreciate the fact that so many bands came to one place."

Macklemore drew one of the most energetic crowds of the day on the In New Music We Trust stage.

The US rapper performed number one single Thrift Shop and finished with Can't Hold Us, which ended with the crowd holding him up by his feet.

Seventeen-year-old Anna said: "We were pretty close. He had people holding his feet and he stood with his arms up. Then, people were flipping him. All you could see were his feet sticking up."

Little Mix played the Main Stage with the former X Factor group's set including a mash-up of girl band classics including Destiny's Child Bootylicious and TLC's No Scrubs.

Jesy Nelson from Little Mix said: "We were just loving it. It was our first proper festival we've ever done and we can say that was one of our favourite performances we've ever done."

Other acts to perform during Sunday were Bastille, We Are The Ocean, Jessie Ware, Sound of 2013 winners HAIM, Disclosure and Jake Bugg.

The 19-year-old said playing the main stage was "brilliant".

"Looking at the line-up I didn't think people would be interested to see me. But they seemed to really appreciate. [It] blew me away.

"You see different pockets of the crowd and it's funny when you think they are cheering for you but really it's because they've just seen the camera."

Police said there had only been a "small number" of arrests over the first two days.

Superintendent Stephen Martin from the Police Service of Northern Ireland said he was pleased with how the event passed off: "This has again shown the City in the light that it deserves in being the perfect host for big occasions."
