Constituency Profile

This is a rural seat covering much of mid Wales.

The constituency contains the towns of Brecon and Llandrindod Wells, as well as Builth Wells, home to the annual Royal Welsh Show. Agriculture is a major employer and the constituency has a high number of small businesses. The constituency has one of the highest employment rates in Wales at 77% (the Wales average is 69%) and one of the lowest out-of-work benefit claimaint rates in Wales at 9% (the Wales average is 12%). The Liberal Democrat leader, Kirsty Williams, has held the seat at the Assembly since the first elections in 1999. At the last election in 2011, she won with 43% of the vote. The Conservatives came second with 33%, Labour were third with 16% and Plaid Cymru fourth with 6%.
