Knife crime campaigner: 'It takes one time'

Caroline Shearer set up the group Only Cowards Carry Weapons Awareness to campaign against knife crime, after her son Jay Whiston was fatally stabbed.

The BBC's Mishal Husain talks to both Ms Shearer and Simon Hughes MP, about whether mandatory jail terms should be given for those convicted of carrying a knife for the second time.

"I think it should be the first time, the second time is too many. It takes one time," says Ms Shearer.

"There are several circumstances when youngsters carry a knife only very briefly - when it has been given to them under pressure," said Simon Hughes MP, but he also said the coalition government was "committed to reviewing sentencing policy".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 9 May 2014.
