VJ Day: Pictures of the 70th anniversary commemorations

To mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender, which brought about the end of World War Two, commemorations have been taking place across the UK. Here is a summary of VJ Day events in pictures:

Commemorations began with the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh attending a service at the St Martin-in-the-Fields church in central London

The hour-long service was led by Reverend Dr Sam Wells and attended by about 200 people, including Prime Minister David Cameron

The monarch took time out to chat to veterans as she made her way to the church just off Trafalgar Square

Following the service, 93-year-old Richard de Renzy Channer - who was awarded a Military Cross for his war efforts - read a poem at the statue of Field Marshall Slim in Whitehall.

Spectators and veterans then made their way to Horse Guards Parade to hear further readings, and watch a flypast

Among the crowd was RAF veteran John Watkins, 89, from Boston, Lincolnshire, who fought with 233 Squadron

As part of the flypast a Hurricane and Typhoon (bottom) fly over Horse Guards Parade

As he arrived Mr Cameron also took the time to meet veterans including 95-year-old John Dale

After the events at Horse Guards Parade veterans were invited to a lunch at Westminster Abbey

Prince Charles attended the event for VJ veterans at College Gardens, Westminster Abbey, which was organised by the Royal British Legion

During the lunch, the Duchess of Cornwall danced with Royal Navy veteran Jim Booth, 94

Crowds lined Whitehall and applauded veterans and servicemen as they went past

Wreaths were also laid in the Hall of Memory in Centenary Square, Birmingham
