Founder of Paralympics Sir Ludwig Guttmann honoured with statue

A statue of the founder of the Paralympics has been unveiled at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire.

Sir Ludwig Guttmann was brought to Oxford as a refugee fleeing Nazi Germany and from there he was asked to run the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville for injured soldiers returning from World War II.

Sir Jimmy Savile, who Sir Ludwig got to help raise money to rebuild the spinal unit, was one of those who donated towards the cost of the statue.

The head of the International Paralympic Committee also accepted a bust of the neurosurgeon which will now be taken to summer and winter games.
