East Lindsey District Council said it was not consulted over the plans

Families from Nottingham will be put off from visiting Skegness next year because of planned work to the railways, tourism officials have said.

Train services between the two stations will be affected for 10 days in July and August as part of £100m of improvements around Nottingham.

Councillors in Skegness said the work could not come at a worse time.

But Network Rail said summer was the quietest period for the railway and was the best time to do the work.

Services which normally go between Nottingham and Skegness will start and terminate at Grantham while work is done, but people will be able to catch buses to and from Grantham.

Service maintained

Councillor Craig Leyland said: "This is a very important link for Skegness and we are concerned about what impact it will have.

"There can be 300,000 people on the coast at any one time, particularly around Skegness."

He added that many visitors from the East Midlands relied on the train service to get to the resort.

Network Rail said it had worked very hard to maintain a service to Skegness, and had held a number of consultation events in Nottingham.

Route managing director Martin Frobisher said: "In terms of the work, we've done everything we can to mitigate the impact."

The work is scheduled to take place between 20 July and 26 August 2013.
