Stanton-by-Dale fire is put out after eight weeks

About 8,000 tonnes of wood and waste were on fire

A fire which started eight weeks ago at a recycling facility in Derbyshire has finally been put out.

Crews had been visiting the site in Lows Lane, in Stanton-by-Dale, since about 8,000 tonnes of material set alight on 15 September.

Firefighters smothered the deep seated fire after burying wood pulp in specially prepared pits on nearby land.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue inspected the site on Wednesday and declared the fire had been completely extinguished.

It thanked the local community for their patience and co-operation during the tackling of the fire.

In September, thick black smoke drifted across the M1 and residents living near the scene were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

Later, hundreds of fish died in a nearby Erewash Canal after oxygen levels in the water dropped dramatically.

The Environment Agency had to reintroduce oxygen in the canal to prevent more fish from dying due to the contaminated water.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
