Police have spoken to more than 300 people as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Scott Fletcher

A fifth person has been arrested after a missing man investigation turned into a murder inquiry.

The disappearance of Scott Fletcher, from Hartlepool, in May 2011, sparked a major search operation.

Police have now arrested a 32-year-old man from County Durham on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

Four other men, aged between 36 and 48 and also from County Durham, were arrested earlier this week on the same charge and later bailed.

Mr Fletcher was last seen in a lay-by opposite the Jet garage on the A181 at Wheatley Hill, near Durham.

In May this year, Cleveland Police said it would review its investigation and revisit witnesses.
