Ameet Mohabeer was found dead at his home in Luton after denying sex assault charges in court

A hospital worker due in court next year charged with sexually assaulting 14 male stroke patients has been discovered dead at his home.

The body of Ameet Mohabeer, 28, who worked at Luton and Dunstable Hospital in Bedfordshire, was found at a house in Butely Road, Luton, on Sunday.

The sexual assaults were alleged to have occurred while he was on duty at Ward 17, a specialist stroke ward.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Helpline started

He had been on bail facing 17 charges of sexual assault on males after pleading not guilty at a hearing at St Albans Crown Court on 15 September.

He had worked at the hospital's stroke ward for 18 months until the allegations surfaced in February this year.

A helpline was set up to allow men who had been treated on the ward to speak to detectives.

Hospital bosses contacted former stroke patients who were asked to come forward.

Police said they would continue to offer support to the victims and confirmed Mr Mohabeer's death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokeswoman said: "No further details can be given until an inquest has been opened, which will be in the next few days."

Luton and Dunstable Hospital said: "We have learned this week of the death of Ameet Mohabeer who had worked at the L&D.

"Staff at the hospital have been informed and we understand a trial will not be taking place."
