The 2 Sisters Food Group said it was consulting over plans to close the factory

Hundreds of jobs are potentially at risk amid plans to close a West Midlands chicken processing factory.

The 2 Sisters Food Group said it was consulting on plans to close its plant at Bevan Way in Smethwick.

The group said the plant, which employs 630 people at Alpha Business Park, was "ageing".

In the event of closure it said it would offer affected staff up to 200 roles in the West Midlands and seek to redeploy others throughout the group.

The plant opened in 1996 and supplies retailers and other manufacturers with chicken portions.

The company, which owns a number of food brands including Fox's Biscuits and Goodfella's Pizza, said: "We do not take this decision lightly and fully understand the impact if this proposal goes ahead.

"We are committed to our operations in the West Midlands."
