Third arrest over South Africa honeymoon death

The couple had been married for two weeks

Police in South Africa say they have arrested a third suspect in connection with the murder of a woman from Bristol who was killed on her honeymoon.

Anni Dewani and her husband Shrien were in a taxi near Cape Town on 13 November when they were kidnapped by armed men.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said they arrested a 31-year-old Cape Town man on Saturday afternoon.

Two men were arrested earlier this week. One of them, Xolile Mngeni, was charged with murder and robbery.

Mr Mngeni, 26, from Khayelitsha, appeared in court on Thursday and was remanded in custody until a hearing on 25 November.

Captain van Wyk, from Western Cape police, said the third suspect, who has not been named, would appear in court on Monday on charges of hijacking and murder.

The kidnappers released Mr Dewani, 31, and the taxi driver unharmed but 28-year-old Mrs Dewani was found dead in the taxi the following morning in the Khayelitsha township.

Police say she had been shot in the back of the neck and had not been sexually assaulted.

Captain van Wyk said detectives had also seized a firearm this week which has been linked to the murder and said police were "working around-the-clock" on the investigation.

The couple, from Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol, had been married for two weeks.

The body of Swedish national Mrs Dewani has now been released to her family.

A fundraising page set up in her memory on the Just Giving website has raised more than £3,500 for a school in India.
