On a chilly Sunday morning thousands of runners took to the streets for Bristol's 25th Half Marathon.

Experienced wheelchair athletes were the first across the start ahead of the the two waves of runners which started at 09:30 BST and 10:00.

Just 32 minutes into the race the elite athletes had covered almost seven miles. The event was eventually won by Kenyan Bernard Rotich - seen here on the left - in a time of 1hr 3min and 56 seconds.

The 13.1 mile (21km) race is a popular event on the UK's running calendar and attracts club runners determined to beat their personal best.

Runners passed under Brunel's historic Bristol Suspension bridge as part of the gruelling loop section along The Portway.

Some members of the armed forces took up the extra challenge of running with heavy kit bags.

Many run to raise money for charity with Children's Hospice South West, WellChild and COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas) set to benefit from this year's event.

A "royal" wave from one of the 20,000 competitors - the majority finished the course in under two-and-a-half hours.
