Una Crown: Wisbech murder trial to start next year
- Published
A man will go on trial next year charged with the murder of 86-year-old retired postmistress Una Crown.
The widow was found lying in a pool of blood, and her clothing burned, in her hallway in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, in 2013.
Police said a post-mortem examination showed she died from stab wounds to her neck and chest.
David Newton was arrested on Monday and appeared at Cambridge Crown Court earlier accused of her murder.
The 69-year-old defendant, of Magazine Close, Wisbech, spoke only to confirm his identity.
Judge Mark Bishop set a provisional trial date of 6 January 2025, with a time estimate of four weeks. He remanded Mr Newton in custody until a plea hearing at the same court on 23 May.
Mrs Crown's death was initially treated as an accident when she was found at her home in Magazine Lane on 13 January 2013 before a murder investigation was launched days later.
