Plans to open part of a new flyover on Cornwall's biggest road have been delayed due to heavy rain.

Road improvements are being made on an eight-mile (13km) stretch of the A30 between Chiverton and Carland Cross.

National Highways had hoped to open two lanes of a flyover at the new Chiverton interchange on Monday, but bad weather has held the plans back.

A weekend closure remains in place as contractors carry out other works.

The closure begins at 20:00 GMT on Friday and finishes at 06:00 on Monday, with a diversion route in place, external.

The road will be closed between Chiverton and Boxheater, with all eastbound and westbound traffic diverted via the B3285 and the A3075.

Neil Winter, National Highways' senior project manager for the scheme, said: "The weekend closure will still take place to enable the opening of the north-south link across the Chybucca junction, but the heavy rainfall has hampered progress in laying the new road surface over the flyover and we need to ensure this is completed and safe for traffic before opening.

"These circumstances are out of our control, and although we anticipate a small delay, we are anticipating opening the flyover in the coming days and ahead of people's Christmas journeys, when traffic volumes are anticipated to be higher."

The road has been closed between the Boxheater and Scorrier junctions overnight since Monday, and on Tuesday night a new cycle bridge was installed at Chiverton.

The £330m project to bring the road up to dual carriageway standard is scheduled to finish in the spring.
