St Nicholas Street in Truro was closed off while firefighters addressed the dangerous building

A shopper described being stuck inside a police cordon with her young daughter while firefighters made safe a "dangerous" building in Cornwall.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to St Nicholas Street at about 12:30 GMT on Saturday.

Crews found "external render in a dangerous position at height".

Vanessa Till said she and her daughter were stuck within the cordon for 30 minutes while firefighters deployed an aerial platform.

She added: "When we saw the police and cranes we did wonder if something more sinister was going on.

"But we could see the front part of the building had started to blow in the wind."

Ms Till said she and daughter Dottie, nine, were told to remain in The Works shop so firefighters could make safe a neighbouring building, and they remained there for about 30 minutes.

"The firefighters went up in a crane and they seemed to remove some plaster," she said.

"The staff were all lovely to us, there was us and another young family and a couple with a buggy all waiting in there.

"It was quite exciting really."
