Weather hits Coventry Godiva Festival substitute

Hundred braved the wet weather to attend Godiva in the Square

Hundreds of people who turned out for a rescheduled music festival in Coventry were hit by bad weather.

A replacement "mini-festival" for the Godiva Festival took place in Broadgate on Sunday.

The original free three-day event at the War Memorial Park was called off in June because of flooding.

The city council said heavy rain had put many people off the replacement event, but up to 2,000 visitors had attended during the day.

'Torrential rain'

Several bands which had been due to perform in June, offered their services free of charge for the Godiva In The Square concert on Sunday.

The city council said the audience peaked at about 300 for The Subways who headlined.

They were supported by local acts Dark Actors and Russian Gun Dogs.

The council's event organiser Lee House said: "It was just torrential, torrential rain."

"I'm chuffed that we had an audience at all, if the sun had been out it would have been heaving."

More than 100,000 people were expected at the Godiva Festival, which was supposed to be held between 29 June and 1 July.
