Pirelli factory death 'not criminal act' say police

Detectives investigating the death of a man at Carlisle's Pirelli tyre factory have ruled out any criminal activity.

George Falder, 48, of Carlisle, was found inside an industrial oven at the factory. Tests showed the father-of-two had not been assaulted before he died.

Cumbria Police said the circumstances surrounding the death remained unexplained and investigation would now continue on behalf of the coroner.

The industrial oven - or autclave - reaches temperatures of 150C (302F).

The police spokesman said Mr Falder's family had been informed and officers continued to support them.

Det Ch Insp Mike Forrester said officers had spoken to about 50 people as part of investigation.

'Real impact'

He added: "So far, my team has spoken to around 50 people who have been able to help us with our inquiries.

"I would like to thank each and every person for coming forward to speak to us. They have been very helpful.

"I would also like to express sincere thanks to the management and staff at Pirellis for their help and co-operation throughout this very difficult week.

"As a result of a full and thorough investigation, we are at a stage where we are satisfied that no crime has taken place.

"Mr Falder's tragic death has had a real impact on all his family, friends and colleagues. His family have been kept informed throughout our investigation and are being supported during this terrible time.

"Our investigation will now continue on behalf of the coroner and we will continue to assist the Health and Safety Executive as they continue their own inquiries."

Mr Falder's family said he had a "heart of gold".

A statement released on Tuesday said: "George was happy spending time with his wife Andrea and two children Emma and Simon, and loved walking pet dog Bailey."
