Cumbria University's Ambleside campus open again

A mothballed university site which shut three years ago has opened its doors again.

The University of Cumbria shut its Ambleside campus in 2010 because of financial difficulties.

But after getting its finances back on track, 100 outdoor education students have just started their studies at the campus.

The university is spending £4m on upgrading the site and it hopes to attract a further 300 students by 2015.

Prof Liz Beaty, pro-vice chancellor, said: "It is very important that the university has a centre right in the Lake District National Park as well as sites across Cumbria.

"We are all very excited about a renewed campus which will be all about renewability and sustainability.

"Having a leadership institute at Ambleside could not be more appropriate."
