A leisure centre revamp and the creation of a harbourside events area will go ahead after the government confirmed £5m for regeneration efforts in a Cumbrian town.

Maryport's Wave Centre is set to benefit from a play centre, expanded gym and refurbished climbing wall.

The money from the Future High Streets Fund will also pay for a promenade cafe and bike hub.

Cumberland Council leader Mark Fryer described it as "brilliant news".

The authority hopes the works will be completed by next summer.

Mr Fryer said: "To meet the terms of the government funding, we had to show that the new investment plans will improve the experience for those living in and visiting Maryport, drive growth and ensure the town's future viability.

"It is brilliant news that these new initiatives obviously meet all those criteria and have been received so positively."

The council said the funding takes the total amount being spent on regeneration projects across the town to £12m.

The former Carlton cinema will be turned into a cultural hub, while the Maritime Museum will be moved into the former Christ Church building.

Its former home on Shipping Brow will become an art gallery.
