Culvert work along the A591 in Cumbria has been officially completed.

Its foundation was in poor condition and the bottom part had been washed away, Cumberland Council, external said.

The improvement works saw the building of a 18ft (6m) concrete base, which will protect against erosion and reduce the risk of flooding on the road near Keswick.

A Cumberland Council spokesperson said the enhancements were essential with the approach of winter.

The works at Whelpside, which cost £12,300 in total, started on 4 September.
