'Scenes of devastation' on flood-hit A591 through Lakes

Engineers say parts of the A591 in Cumbria have been left "like a bomb site" after the severe flooding and landslides caused by Storm Desmond.

A full inspection of the route is now under way with the military helping some of the heavy clearing operations.

The road is blocked or eroded in a number of places causing some motorists to have to make a 120-mile (193km) detour.

Karl Melville from Cumbria Highways and Ricki Crawford from Cumbria County Council are working on one of the worst affected areas near Thirlmere
