Campaigners trying to save a Derby theatre are optimistic after a report found it was possible to restore the derelict building.

The Grade II listed Hippodrome on Green Lane, which opened its doors in 1914, was damaged by repair work in 2008 and more recently by fire.

An architect's study found the theatre could be renovated at a cost of £15m.

Joan Travis, of the Hippodrome Restoration Trust, said the theatre could be Derby's "jewel in the crown".

She said: "It would bring in a lot of people in, make money and be the centre of culture."

The trust is also set to publish the results of a public survey, which was extended due to the large number of responses it received about the building's future.
