Two Devon and Cornwall police officers stabbed in Dartmoor village

The incident happened on Burrator Avenue in Princetown

Two police officers were stabbed in what has been described as a "frenzied" attack by the Police Federation.

The Devon and Cornwall Police officers were assaulted while on-duty in Princetown, Devon at about 03:00 BST on Friday morning.

They were taken to hospital and their injuries are not currently believed to be life-threatening, the force said.

A 60-year-old man from the area has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while the investigation continues

The officers were called to an address in Burrator Avenue around 23:55 BST and a knife was seized at the scene.

One officer remains in hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries to his face and arms.

The other suffered injuries to his arms and has been discharged from hospital.

The suspect left the scene and was later located by officers.

Andy Berry, chairman of Devon and Cornwall Police Federation said: "Our colleagues were subjected to a frenzied and sustained bladed weapon assault.

"Both officers sustained a significant number of wounds and both ultimately were conveyed to hospital where one remains awaiting surgery."

He added: "Given the rural nature of where this incident occurred, our colleagues were fortunate that other officers were in the vicinity and were able to render urgent assistance in a matter of minutes.

"One can only imagine the possible consequences had this not been the case."

A cordon remains in place at the scene and police said residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while the investigation continues.
