A coastwatch building on Exmouth seafront has been demolished following recent severe storm damage.

East Devon District Council (EDDC), said the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) building was undermined and unrepairable.

The demolition work was carried out as part of an ongoing £4.3m project by EDDC to repair the town's sea wall.

The council said storm damage might also mean current reinforcement work being extended further than planned.

EDDC said Exmouth's Harbour View slipway was also out of action to allow temporary repairs, so it could be used for the summer season.

It said despite the storm damage, repair work on the sea wall was "progressing well".

The council said operations would be suspended over the summer, with phase two of the project resuming in the autumn.

Repair work began after cracks appeared in the sea wall last August.
