A 12th Century Dorset church has been damaged in a fire.

Firefighters were called to St Mary's Church in Maiden Newton when smoke was spotted around the roof at 0620 BST.

Four fire crews initially used an aerial platform to avoid damaging the original doors and hinges, thought to be among the oldest in England.

The fire, which caused interior smoke damage and a hole in the roof, is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Rev Graham Perryman said the church was "treasured by the community" and services were likely to be held in the village hall while repairs are carried out.
