A major route into Bournemouth will shut later for the first of six overnight closures as part of ongoing roadworks.

The £22m scheme to rebuild a 5.5-mile (8km) stretch of the A338 Spur Road, which started in September, is due to finish in May.

It will close each night between the Ashley Heath and Cooper Dean roundabouts from 20:00 GMT to 06:00.

There will also be a daytime closure of one northbound lane from Monday.

'Crumbling road'

Councillor Peter Finney, from Dorset County Council, has advised motorists to "plan ahead" and consider alternative forms of transport or routes, or to consider travelling outside of peak times.

A 4-mile (6km) temporary barrier will be installed during the closures, which will be lifted on 19 March.

A new concrete central barrier will then be built, the council said.

The authority has previously said the base of the 40-year-old road "is crumbling and not providing a suitable foundation for the road surface".

Ashley Heath Roundabout is due to fully reopen from 06:00 on Monday.
