Two Portland prison disturbances in two days

A member of prison staff was injured in one of two disturbances in two days at a Dorset young offenders institution.

Four prisoners climbed on to netting at HMP/YOI Portland and three fires were started in cells on Wednesday.

The Prison Service said no one was hurt in the incident, first reported in the Dorset Echo, and it was resolved later.

The staff member was injured trying to help resolve another disturbance on Thursday, which lasted from the morning until 22:00 BST.

'Concerted indiscipline'

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "Prison staff safely resolved an incident involving a number of offenders at HMP/YOI Portland.

"The offenders involved have been transferred to alternative establishments, and the prison is now returning to a normal regime."

A member of staff suffered minor injuries but was not taken to hospital.

Dorset Police and South Western Ambulance Service were notified but did not attend the institution.

The Prison Service said all four prisoners involved in the incident on Wednesday were now in segregation.

Over the last four years Portland prison had nine "incidents of concerted indiscipline", the Howard League for Penal Reform said.

There was one in 2012, three in 2014 and five in 2015.
