Man jailed after head-on crash in stolen BMW in Clacton
A man has been jailed after a head-on crash in a stolen car that seriously injured an elderly driver.
CCTV footage showed a BMW 3 Series overtaking two cars in Oxford Road, Clacton, Essex in October 2022 before colliding with a Citroen C3 travelling in the opposite direction.
The Citroen was propelled into a front garden, trapping its 90-year-old driver, who spent several weeks recovering in hospital.
Essex Police said Billy Mooney got out of the BMW and fled the scene but was tracked down and later arrested.
The 20-year-old, of Manor Court, Enfield, London, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, taking without consent, driving without insurance, failing to report a collision and failing to stop after a collision.
He was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court to three years and eight months in a young offenders’ institution.
