Driver crashes through roadworks barrier near Wisbech

Video showed the moment a car crashed through a barrier on a section of road closed off for roadworks.

Workers could be seen quickly moving out of the way of the silver BMW as resurfacing was taking place on the A47 near Wisbech in Cambridgeshire on 24 May.

A 29-year-old man from March in Cambridgeshire was banned from driving for four months after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.

National Highways said there had been 220 roadwork incursions across the east of England so far in 2023, compared with 122 during 2022.

Regional head of service delivery Heather Openshaw said: "There can be no excuse for this type of incident, and we are lucky no one was seriously injured or killed."
