Thunder and lightning is possible as intense rain moves east on Tuesday, the Met Office said

Parts of Hertfordshire and Essex have been warned to expect heavy rain and strong gusts of wind on Tuesday.

A band of squally, thundery rain is likely to push quickly east after reaching Cornwall at 05:00 GMT, external, the Met Office said.

Sudden, torrential downpours would bring 15-20mm (0.6-0.8in) of rain, with 40-50mph (64kmh-80kmh) winds likely.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said it could lead to "grim conditions" in the morning rush hour.

The adverse weather could cause short-term loss of power, delays to public transport and poor driving conditions, the Met Office added.

Damage caused by lightning strikes or gusty winds are also possible.

The last of the showers should clear into the North Sea by noon, the Met Office said.
