Plans for a new £70m city centre development in Southampton have been given the go-ahead.

Developer Hammerson's proposals for a vacant site beside WestQuay shopping centre were given outline planning permission by the city council.

The Watermark WestQuay development includes a cinema, restaurants and shops and could also incorporate a residential tower block and a hotel.

The company said it would now start to work on detailed plans.
