A great-great-grandmother is spending her 100th birthday abseiling down Portsmouth's landmark Spinnaker Tower in aid of a Hampshire hospice.

Doris Long, MBE, of Hayling Island, is known as "Daring Doris" and already holds the world record for the oldest person to abseil.

She has clocked up a dozen descents and raised almost £10,000 for Rowans Hospice in Purbrook.

Mrs Long, who began abseiling at 85, is descending 328ft (100m).

She will be accompanied by ITV presenter Fred Dinenage.

Mrs Long said: "I like just a nice, steady travel down there, looking around and chatting to the other person that's with you.

"Two go down together - you always have someone with you, alongside you.

"It's really exhilarating."
