Firefighters have worked through the night to put out a barn fire on the Isle of Wight.

Crews from 17 stations from the island and mainland were called to the blaze in Bowcombe, off Bowcombe Road, shortly after midnight.

The fire service said the roof of the traditional barn collapsed amid the flames and the structure was destroyed.

The fire was put out after more than four hours, with crews remaining on site to damp down.

Officers arrived 24 minutes after the first call was received, the fire service said.

A short time later, a large blaze broke out at a house just over eight miles (14km) away in Brading.

Officers at the barn were already "proactively [adjusting] firefighting tactics", before they received the other call, to ensure they had sufficient resources to "prioritise a risk to life incident", a spokesperson said.

They also said resources were "strategically" brought on to the island from the mainland to help "provide fire cover" after the first incident.
