Fears up to 330 jobs lost at Young's Seafood in Grimsby

Hundreds of jobs could go at Young's Seafood in Grimsby after the company lost a vital contract, a union fears.

The company said the loss of the Sainsbury's processing contract affected sites in Marsden Road, Grimsby and Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire.

Trade union Unite said that the "worst-case scenario" could result in the loss of 330 jobs at the Grimsby base.

Young's said it would be discussing the implications with staff and stakeholders.

The fresh salmon and smoked salmon processing contract was not renewed following a recent tendering process.

It is expected that the contract will transfer to the new supplier from November.

Unite regional officer Dave Monaghan said Young's was looking to fill the void left by the contract loss.

He said: "We will be working closely with management in the days and weeks to come to mitigate any job losses. At present, we can't put a figure on the number of job losses, if any.

"The worst-case scenario would be in the region of 330 jobs lost."
