The first phase of building work on the Chatham Docks development could begin next year

Plans to transform a 26-acre site at Chatham Docks into a £650m development, with the creation of almost 3,500 jobs, have been approved by Medway Council.

The Peel Group's proposed Chatham Waters project on the brownfield site includes homes, offices and a hotel.

It was given outline planning permission following two years of discussions and a public consultation.

The scheme will now be referred to the Department for Communities and Local Government for a final decision.

James Whittaker, development director at the Peel Group, said he hoped building work would begin on the site near the River Medway next year.
