Kirkham baby death: Police 'will find baby's mother'

Police are confident they will find the mother of a baby boy who was found dead in a stream in Lancashire.

The infant was found by a dog walker in Spen Brook, off Carr Lane in Kirkham, on 1 October.

Detectives have been trying to trace the child's mother but have so far been unsuccessful.

A public meeting was held at Kirkham Community Centre on Monday night to allow members of the community an opportunity to discuss what happened.

Det Insp Martin Clague said there has been a lot of interest from local residents and inquiries were continuing.

He said: "We are doing door-to-door enquiries, we are doing forensic type work and we are confident that we will find the identity of the mother."

Senior detectives involved in the investigation were at the meeting, at 18:00 BST, to answer questions from the public.

Pushing a pram

The baby, who was discovered in the stream at about 14:00 BST, was thought to be up to one-month-old and born full-term.

He was wearing a fleece jumper which had turned brown, but was originally thought to have been blue and white.

Two towels, one green and the other with a Union Flag pattern, were found nearby.

Police have previously said a teenage girl was seen pushing a pram on a dirt track close to the area a few days before the body was found.

She is described as being in her late teens, 5ft 5in tall (1.6m), with dark hair pulled into a ponytail and wearing dark trousers and a zip-up top.
