Lottery boost for three deprived Lancashire communities

Three deprived parts of Lancashire are to receive £1m each from The Big Lottery Fund to help revive them.

Residents in the Revoe area of Blackpool, Bradley in Nelson and Burnley's Gannow Park will get a chance to decide how to spend the cash.

The money could be spent on anything from creating new community facilities to training and employment schemes, or providing more youth activities.

It has come from a £200m Big Lottery Fund scheme called Big Local.

Decline of industry

Helen Bullough, head of the Big Lottery Fund's North West region, said: "This funding scheme is going to put residents in these areas at the heart of decision-making and give them a real say in how to improve their local area.

"But more than that it's going to strengthen these communities and help local people to build on their skills and experience so that they can continue to work together to overcome challenges, address local problems, and make a positive difference in their communities over the next 10 years and beyond."

The Big Lottery Fund said the chosen communities had a history of experiencing difficulty in getting support and funding.

It said they faced issues from the decline of local industry, high unemployment or low average wages, to a pressing need for new support services or activities.
