Flood defences at Boston to be strengthened

Flood defences in Lincolnshire are to be strengthened in a major project to protect homes and businesses.

Work to stabilise banks on the Tidal Haven, downstream of the town of Boston, will run until November.

The Environment Agency said the tidal nature of the watercourse, which runs near the River Welland, meant the banks had begun to slump.

The £70,000 scheme will also see stone to stabilise the area carried by barge to minimise road congestion.

Alec Ambridge-Richardson, from the agency, said: "Without these works, the level of protection offered by the defences would decrease. We therefore carry out works periodically to ensure the standard of protection for people and property in the area is maintained.

"This work will help to prevent further erosion of the defence and reduce the risk of flooding for Boston and the surrounding area."
