London 2012: Olympic torch relay to travel Lincolnshire's coast

The torch will visit resorts along the Lincolnshire coast on its journey from Louth to Lincoln

The places the Olympic torch relay will visit in Lincolnshire have been announced.

It will begin its journey on 27 June in Louth, before travelling along the coast to Mablethorpe and Skegness.

The torch will then make its way to Lincoln for an overnight stop, where it will be welcomed at a special cultural event organised by the local authority.

The flame will then head for Grantham, before visiting the county for a second time on 4 July in Market Deeping.

'Biggest event'

East Lindsey councillor and Lincolnshire's spokeswoman for the 2012 Games, Doreen Stephenson, said she was delighted with the news.

She said: "London 2012 presents East Lindsey with some important opportunities and we've worked hard to ensure we're well represented on the torch route.

"It means people living locally and visitors to our district will be able to be part of the biggest sporting event on earth."

Locog chairman Lord Coe said: "This is the UK's moment to shine and I want to encourage people to start planning how they can be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"We are thrilled to confirm that towns and villages across East Lindsey will act as host locations for the Olympic flame during its journey around the UK."

The torch will travel through: Legbourne, Withern, Maltby Le Marsh, Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe, Sutton on Sea, Mumby, Hogsthorpe, Ingoldmells, Winthorpe, Skegness, Wainfleet All Saints, Wrangle, Boston, Sleaford, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln and Saxilby.

Free celebration

The torch will be part of a free event to be held on Wednesday 27 June, 2012 at Yarborough Sports Ground in Lincoln.

Councillor Ric Metcalfe, leader of the City of Lincoln Council, said: "Playing host to the Olympic flame is a great honour and we're delighted to be welcoming it to Lincoln.

"Planning is already well underway to ensure the evening celebration brings out all that is great about this city," he said.

"We will be working with our partners to ensure that young people in Lincoln are central to this once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of 2012 Olympic legacy."

On 28 June, the torch will travel from Lincoln to Nottingham via Newark and Grantham before visiting the county for a second time on 4 July in Market Deeping.

It will then visit: Thurlby, Bourne, Spalding, Moulton, Whaplode, Holbeach and Long Sutton on its way to an overnight stop in Norwich.

The 70-day relay begins at Land's End, Cornwall, on 19 May 2012 and arrives at the Olympic opening ceremony in London on 27 July.
