Police submit file to CPS over Boston explosion

Five men died and a sixth was seriously injured in the explosion

Police in Lincolnshire investigating an explosion at an industrial estate in which five Lithuanian men died have prepared a case file for review.

The five men, who lived in Peterborough, died in the fire in an industrial unit in Boston on 13 July.

Lincolnshire Police found evidence to suggest the unit was being used to illegally brew alcohol.

A file has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to see if any further legal action will be taken.

A sixth man survived but suffered 75% burns in the blast and underwent surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said the man had "made slow but steady progress" and had since left hospital.

Alcohol chemicals

A decision from the CPS is expected in mid-January.

Vaidas Krupenkinas, 39, Ovidijus Mejeris, 26, Laimutis Simkus, 32, Ricardas Gecas, 24, and Erlandas Duzinskas, 18 are believed to have died instantly in the blast.

Broadfield Lane Industrial Estate was closed for a week while forensic investigations were carried out.

In July, Supt Keith Owen, from Lincolnshire Police, said: "What I can confirm is that we have found chemicals on the premises which tend to indicate either the manufacture or production of alcohol."

No charges have yet been brought in connection with the explosion.
