The city's former mayor says the use of tarmac outside the cathedral is an "eyesore"

Repairs to the cobbled pavement outside Lincoln Cathedral have been described as "a real eyesore" by the city's former mayor.

About half a dozen tarmac fillings have been spotted in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral's west front.

Rosanne Kirk, who has in the past used Tik Tok to promote the city to would-be visitors, said it looked "awful".

Lincolnshire County Council said it had a statutory duty to keep the area safe, adding that the repairs were temporary.

The former Labour councillor told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "It is a real kick in the teeth that awful tarmac is being used on the cobbles in the heart of historic Lincoln.

"This has gone too far and is a real eyesore for residents and tourists.

"Our county council should defend our history, not destroy it," she added.

In response, Richard Davies, executive member for highways at the county council, said: "The tarmac repair is a temporary measure put in place to make the walkway safe to use.

"It's not the finished item and will remain until we can get the right materials in keeping with the rest of the area," he said.

"We must keep the area safe as a statutory duty. But we also take our responsibility to keep historic areas of Lincoln looking how they should extremely seriously."
