Seven men have gone on trial charged with the "planned and targeted execution" of a man who was shot dead in south-east London.

Kai McGinley, 24, was discovered fatally injured by police in Erith, on the evening of the 9 February last year after reports of shots being fired.

Opening the case for the prosecution, Brian O'Neill KC said the killing was a "was almost certainly drugs-related".

The defendants all deny murder and attempted murder.

Mr McGinley, from Southwark, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, despite the efforts of the emergency services.

The jury heard that the seven defendants, who all knew each other, were the occupants of two vehicles, a Land Rover and a Peugeot car, that drove along Pembroke Road in Erith towards a Mini carrying Mr McGinley and two of his friends.

The Land Rover, which the court was told contained four of the defendants, then deliberately rammed "at speed and with force" into Mr McGinley's vehicle, the Old Bailey was told.

As the Mini came to a stop, occupants of the Peugeot and the Land Rover got out of their vehicles and opened fire.

Mr O'Neill described the shooting as a "planned and targeted execution".

"Four or five shots were fired from two shotguns at close range, one of which fatally wounded Kai McGinley," he said.

"They then fled the scene."

The court heard that CCTV footage showed the Land Rover and Peugeot circling the same area earlier that evening.

The seven men are also charged with the attempted murder of the two men who were travelling with Mr McGinley in the Mini.

Bradlee Reeve, 34, of Chapman Road, Erith; Enriko Spahiu, 21, of Elmhurst, Belvedere; Anthony Wallder 21, of Pastry Road, Bexley; Kai Osibodu, 24 of Riverdale Road, Erith; Connor Brookes, 21 of Horsa Road, Erith; Jalees Selby-Gangera 18, of Woodfield Close, Erith; and Charlie Brabon, 19 of Byron Drive, Bexley all deny murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The trial continues.
