A high-profile policing operation has taken place across Greater Manchester for the Manchester United and Manchester City derby match.

In addition to a heavy police presence near Old Trafford, there was extra security at pubs televising the game, which Manchester United won 2-1.

Assistant Chief Constable Neil Wain said: "Our aim is to ensure the game is a safe and enjoyable experience."

Greater Manchester Police was expecting a rise in domestic violence calls.

'Firm action'

Officers had also been warning people to expect heavy traffic around the Greater Manchester area into the late evening because of other high-profile games, including the Stockport and Bury derby and the visit of Sheffield Wednesday to Rochdale.

ACC Wain said: "The derby match always creates a good atmosphere and we want fans to enjoy what is a great occasion in the football calendar."

"We want fans to enjoy the occasion but we will also take firm action if it is needed."

Police said such football matches often preceded a rise in domestic abuse incidents.

ACC Wain added: "We are prepared for the possibility of domestic abuse and full support is available to those in need."
