More than 200 charged after Manchester and Salford riots

Over 200 people have been charged after the riots in Salford and Manchester earlier this month, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

Most were charged over looting which took place on 9 August, including burglary, theft and handling stolen goods.

Other charges included violent disorder and incitement.

The CPS said so far 84 defendants had pleaded guilty, and 48 had been sentenced.

Nazir Afzal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West, said: "I suspect many thought there was safety in numbers.

"Those who are appearing in court are finding out that's not the case and that they now have to face up to their actions that night."
