A new Metrolink line between Manchester and Droylsden has opened to passengers, seven weeks behind schedule.

The route, which will serve the city's Velodrome and Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, was delayed due to problems with a tram management system.

Councillor Andrew Fender, chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) committee, said the delay had been "disappointing".

The Droylsden line adds eight new stops to the Metrolink network.

The new stops are New Islington, Holt Town, Etihad Campus, Velopark, Clayton Hall, Edge Lane, Cemetery Road and Droylsden.

A TfGM spokesman said an extension to the line which would take it through to Ashton-under-Lyne was due to be opened by the end of 2013.
