Police officers are taking part in a charity walk around the Greater Manchester boundary in memory of two officers who were killed on duty.

PCs Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, were shot dead in Hattersley on 18 September while investigating a suspected burglary.

Ten officers, from Tameside and Oldham Division, began the 110 mile (177km) walk this morning.

They will walk for over 50 hours and finish on Sunday morning.

Sgt Stuart Charlesworth, of the Tameside West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Our walk was originally planned for September with a view of finishing in time for the National Police Memorial Day, but following on from the shootings we made a decision to postpone it to a later date.

"We are now being joined by some of Nicola and Fiona's former colleagues who also want to be able to raise money in their name while doing something worthwhile."

The walk starts at the Civic Hall at Uppermill, passing through Stockport, Altrincham, Hale and Culcheth

The officers will arrive in Wigan town centre on Saturday morning, before walking to Horwich and Ramsbottom.

During the evening and overnight they will travel through Denshaw before returning to Uppermill on Sunday morning.

Money raised will go to the Care of Police Survivors charity.

Dale Cregan, 29, has admitted the officers' murders and is currently on trial at Preston Crown Court.
